Elizabeth Berdann | Rebus

Rebus, 1993

Oil on copper and aluminum, brass letters, engraved brass
13” x 73-½”

Rebus is the first of two “solvable” paintings (see also A Rebus in this category). Rebuses are visual puzzles where images stand in for words or parts of words, and letters are subtracted or added to create a phrase unrelated to the images. The solutions of Rebus and A Rebus work together, concealing a conversation. Complicating the viewer’s experience is that without the ability to solve the puzzles, the full meaning is lost. A prize was offered (in 1993, at Josh Baer Gallery) to the first person to solve both of my Rebus paintings.
